Backing up to someone else’s computer

Last year I started looking at alternatives to CrashPlan for backups, it is now six months later and I can say that I have gone with both Backblaze and CrashPlan.

As my parent’s computer is the are the more common case of a single computer where everything is backed up automatically there were a couple of options. The prices were essentially the same so I chose BackBlaze purely because I have heard good things about them, the alternatives I didn’t know much about.

For my use case of wanting to select what is backed up as well as being able to backup to external drives I didn’t find an alternative to CrashPlan, they were also offering half price for the first year, so I signed up.

I currently have just over 1TB of photos which took almost a month to upload to CrashPlan. This is on my 100/40 NBN connection which is now reliable unlike earlier in the year, this would have been unthinkable if I were still on ADSL. Of course while the cloud backup was incomplete, my local backups to external drives have always been up to date.
