LCA2012 - Balloon launch
How do you get an entire theatre of geeks to follow you out into a hot windy field? Inflate a red balloon. Three guys from Project Horus talked about what it means to fly a balloon into the stratosphere, this was a demo with a small 50g tracking payload.

ISS visible pass (15 February 2010)
Some test shots of the stars and then my first shot of the International Space Station passing overhead. I'm actually quite pleased given that it's from the suburbs of Melbourne with plenty of light pollution.

Light painting
After a failed attempt with the camera club to shoot start trails (it clouded over instead of clearing) we switched to plan b, long exposures of a different kind.

Removing the East Malvern pedestrian bridge
In order to widen the Monash Freeway they needed to remove the pedestrian bridge at East Malvern railway station as one of the pillars needs to be relocated further out. These photos are from the second of two 11PM-8AM closures of the freeway.

Web Standards Group (April 2008)
Web Standards Group - April meeting (Melbourne) I again borrowed a 50mm f/1.8 lens that really worked well in this situation where I was only using the limited available light. Apart from cropping I only adjusted the two photos in the set of the audience. One to brighten and the other to (attempt to) colour balance the flash.
Melbourne Perl Mongers (April 2008)
April 2008 Melbourne Perl Mongers meeting at a new location in Southbank / South Melbourne. I had also borrowed a 50mm f/1.8 lens for the night. I liked the wide aperture, but not the narrow angle of view.

Die-cast Dinky Toys
My father's Dinky Toys (not the only Dinky product he had). I remember playing with these at my grandparent's house many years ago and for some time now they have been stored up in the roof. I have identified them as best I could (http://www.dinkytoys.ch/ was a lot of help) but there are a couple (such as the 3-ton Army Wagon which might just be missing the wagon canopy) that I am not sure about.
My Lego sets
After being stored in the roof for many years, I sorted out the tubs of mixed pieces by assembling the sets as best I could.
Bike paths and Eastlink (January 2008)
Damien and I went for a bicycle ride that encountered EastLink a couple of times... Description and maps can be found on my site.

Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve (March 2007)
One Sunday I rode down the Dandenong Creek Path to the Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve. There were two reasons for this. First to see if it was a viable option for someone riding from Endeavour Hills to Monash and second to see what the scout campsite was like these days.

Kooyong Station (May 2005)
After Melbourne Perl Mongers I got a lift to Kooyong Station. Unfortunately I just missed a train which meant I had to wait half an hour for the next one. This gave me the opportunity to take some photos but the low light made that difficult.

Springvale Cemetery Railway Line (March 2005)
"Another feature of the cemetery that no longer exists is the Railway Line. The Springvale Cemetery Railway Line opened on the 7th of February 1904. Corpses from Melbourne and intermediate stations were carried free of charge on the assumption that mourners journeying by rail to the Cemetery would bring revenue to the Railway Department. The carriage of pauper corpses were charged at 10 shillings as it was assumed that no such revenue would be obtained. Funeral trains left from the Mortuary Platform at Princes Bridge Station Melbourne and travelled to The Necropolis Springvale Station. Trains stopped at Springvale to pick up the baton to change the line. In January 1951 the line was closed when Sandown Racecourse was extended." - The Necropolis Springvale, A Historical Perspective
